I consider myself to be a decent back-yard mechanic. But I have run into a problem on my X I cannot figure out.
I did the front brakes last summer before our trip to South Dakota. New pads, rotors, calipers, pins, etc. Bedded them in properly. They have been fine since.
I am getting ready to do the back brakes, but a problem came up.
When I make a right hand turn, after the turn the brake pedal goes soft. If I come up to a stop sign, stop, then make the turn, continue on for a few hundred feet, then brake again, the pedal goes down approx 50% further than normal. One pump and they are back up and working fine. The pedal stays firm until the next right turn.
Looked at the front brakes, re-bled them, the pins are floating fine, etc. I went ahead and did the back brakes yesterday with new rotors, pads and pins, and it still is the same.
Is this probably a master cylinder problem? I am at a loss... HELP!!
Bob
Not a guru, but when you bled the front brakes are you getting the same flow out of both front bleeders? I don't know how many miles are on your ride, but you put a lot of cash into your brakes(slide pins, rotors, pads, calipers) Might want to look into replacing the hydraulic hoses, they are rubber and can deteroriate from the inside restricting flow(pressure). Just a thought! let us know.

I have 130,xxx miles on it. The flow was nice and strong out of all the bleeders. The hoses look and feel to be in good shape. A good thought, though! Thanks! (I may check them again as I am at a loss...)

When your pedal goes soft, does the truck to pull to either side?
When your pedal goes soft, does the truck to pull to either side?
Good question. I don't know. I focused more on the soft pedal and didn't pay attention whether it pulled. It does it at low speed so it wouldn't be much of a pull anyway, but I have to check now....
I would try having the brakes self adjust. Just go up to a stop sign slowly and floor the brake. The brakes will self adjust and will fell like a different vehicle.

I'm still with the hose being an issue as well. I had a truck come into the shop the other day - truck was pulling to the right each time he hit the brakes. Turns out the hose was collapsing and not releasing the pressure. Took a few test drives and trying a few things before we figured it out. Replaced the hose - bled the system and it's like a new truck. Just an fyi - list price on the front hoses is about $30 a piece from Napa. They have 2 different ones available -not sure the difference - one is 45 the other is 30.

While the hoses look and feel fine, there may be some merit to this. Went for a drive this afternoon, and if I keep my foot lightly on the brake when I turn right, the pedal stays up. I also notice that it does pull ever so slightly to the right when braking hard, especially after the dreaded right turn - soft pedal ordeal.
Are both hoses (Left and right), the same? Wonder what the $15 difference is?

Since you are pulling to the right,
Sounds like your right brakes/hardware/hoses are fine.
Your left side brakes are not doing their job proportionally with your right. If it turns out to be your left hose collapsing and you replace it, since the truck has 130,00 on it, it just might be a good idea to do both.
Left & Right are not the same, or at least the ones I have done.
Don't know which your takes, look before you buy.

I am not a GURU, but could you get where you need to go while making only left turns? May take a bit longer but..... there ya go, problem solved. LOL and when you hear a strange sound from the truck just turn up the radio.
Sounds like a soft hose. Be careful because if it is and it goes you dump all the fluid and NO brakes. Check hoses with wheels turned. check blocks. do you see ANY wet / fluid around anything?
The fact that it only does it on right turns is the whole key here. That is why I am leaning towards loose parts or something happening with the hose when you turn.
Went and ordered the front hoses today. Will have them tomorrow. This REALLY baffles me. This thing stops better than it ever did when going in a straight line OR turning left. It still stops good after a right turn, I just have to give the pedal a pump or two....
OK, got the new front brake hoses. The brake line came loose very easily from the calipers, but how do they attach to the brake line coming down from the master cylinder? They are threaded inside and have a bracket and clip on it. I don't see how it comes apart?
