A4WD to 4x4HI Switch Problem?
I've got a 98 Expy 5.4L. I've had it in 4X4 HI a couple times in the last month and I have a problem with it holding there, or so it appears. It will click back and forth between 4X4 HI and A4WD, at least thats what the dash light says. You can hear a clicking going on so I assume a switch is operating. Anybody have any ideas on what this could be? Bad switch or sensor?

I have had the same experience with my 98 Expy. But I experienced it on the beach and I really felt the truck bog down a little. I took it in to the dealer but they found no error codes and did not a way to test the truck in 4wd mode.

I've also had the same problem several times on my 98 exp. and it happened when on the beach. The only observation I can add is when I shift directly from 2 wheel drive to 4X4 hi range at low speed (approx 10mph with tires deflated, it is more likely to occur. It seems to happen on one spot on the beach in particular, when I am climbing over a sand dune with extremely soft sand and many ruts in the tire tracks which causes the vehicle to rock quite a bit. I also observed that when I approach the beach from the paved surface to the sand, stop the vehicle , put the transmission into neutral then engage 4x4 HI,the system works fine. At first I thought the switch had to be the problem, but I am very certain the switch is in the correct position. In the back of my mind, I wonder if the transfer case is not always engaging fully, causing some position sensor in the transfer case shift mechanisms not to recognize that it is in 4 x 4 HI.
