my latest project: dump bed
got my rig back.i just pressure washed it,getting the big flakes and chunks off the old steel to ready it for primer.
they did a nice job here in town setting her up for me,replacing the bad sections and mounting it to the frame etc.
all working great.i need to:
1.extend the filler tubes and run back up to have custom hangers built to hold them out,so i can just fuel up without lifting the bed.
2.prime & paint (doing myself with compressor and spray gun.)
3.deck it with new lumber.id like to find some white ash.
4.re plywood the racks and box the top in.
you can some thrown together hangers i had hooked temp to the old planks.this was enough to pass inspection at the time to get me on the road with her.since it wasn't all welded up sturdy to the frame,i wasn't using the dump yet.
can't wait now.
there's my salsco chipper to the right.finally got it in a pic or two cool lol.
it weighs 2k lbs approx.so she pulls quite easy with the IDI.
(it chips brush up to 6" diameter.it has as 6x 12" feed shoot for easy feeding.its a diesel too!!! self feed chipper.i bought it used off ebay a couple years ago.works great! that needs some regular routine maintenance now too, along with a new starter/battery cables/glow plugs and stuff.)

got her all primed now.
you can see my stake body sections out behind the chipper.those had a few bends i pounded out straight, and shot a couple rust spots with primer.other than that, those are ready for paint tomorrow too and new plywood sides in a little bit.
spraying it all flat black.

thanks guys.
yeah,this had screws.
i didn't know how self tappers would fair trying to get threw that thick C channel.
i picked up carriage bolts, nuts and lock washers.hows that sound star?
gunna be some drilling, but i don't mind that.i just got standard hardware too,so it will rust up and i'll have to burn 'em latter when/if i brake a plank, which is unlikely since i load everything by hand, and shoot chips in.
i figure if the lock washers hold for a year, then rust will hold 'em for good anyway lol.

oh will they? man, maybe it will be a trip back to home depot then.
that stuff is thick.i never thought they'd go through.
maybe this stuff isn't any thicker than what was on there originally then.lol dang good thing i called the shop up latter and just had them all replaced.i was originally just gunna have the few missing/rotted out sections replaced.
then i got thinking,it must be thin all over, and if this is the same stock C channel thats commonly used, holy crap those where all shot then lol.so if screws went in this stuff new the first time, then cool.i'll use 'em.
im just looking for 2-1/2" self tapping metal screws that i can find at HD?
......ahh i know where there's a trailer sales/parts place too in case.

No you are not going to find them at HD ... They are a trailer shop item.
[delete]
They are 1/4" countersinks that use a torx bit.

[edit]
Like these: Stainless Steel Trailer Decking Screws
These use a phillips or Square bit.
[/edit]
-Enjoy

What festus said. The screws will never loosen and hold it a lot more rigid than bolts, this will strengthen your bed so that it wont flex. I have never been able to use bolts on a trailer, they wind up breaking pretty quick, which lets the trailer twist and flex more breaking more of them.
Another thing is to use toung and groove if you can get it.
