We bought a 85 F250, as we started driving it, it would die but starts right back up. Sometimes it only dose it once a day other days it can 5-6 times. Today one top of that it has started back firing, black smoke with alittle jerking motion...any ideas
Okay, '85 460, that means we can rule out the pesky TFI module... Is the stalling part of a sloppy idle issue or will it just cut out for no reason? Will it stall when it is cold or only after it has been run long enough to fully warm up? Backfiring and black smoke sound like a carburetor issue. Check the choke to ensure it is fully open when the engine has warmed up. There is a possibility that you have a failed power valve in the carb. This is difficult to diagnose and is usually repaired as part of a complete carb rebuild.
I've heard of that problem before. My dad had an issue like that with his Grand Marquis, sometimes it would just die, sometimes it would die when you floored the gas and run again when you let off. Ford said it was the module and replaced it. That seemed to fix the problem, good thing it was under warranty. I say check the module. Also, you might see if it is setting any trouble codes.
Do you have dual tanks or electric fuel pump(s)? If it is ignition related, it could be the DSII module, the pickup in the distributer or the ignition coil. Too bad it doesn't stay dead, kinda hard to troubleshoot intermittent problems. I would suspect the DSII module first. Maybe hit a junkyard for a few "test parts"? Carb'd 460's don't have a computer so no codes to pull...

Turn both screws all the way tight. This will make it lean.
Now back them off 1 1/2 turns. This is standard.
Now try starting truck and see how it runs, and you can fine tune it. Slowly turn one 1/8-1/4 of a turn until you get it where you need it. Also make sure that you turn each equal amounts.
