Question '68 302 Questions

Hi all,
I have the complete drivetrain from a 68 mustang, including a 302, fmx, driveshaft and posi rearend. I've got some general questions for ya:

1) Is this older 302 the same as the newer 302 engines?

2) To get it to fit with a MII setup I was told that I need a rear sump oil pan. What year/make/model vehicle/engine would I get a rear sump pan from?

3) I haven't found much for performance upgrades for the FMX transmission. What are my options for mating up a different transmission? I'd like to use an automatic.

4) Is Desktop Dyno a good source for mating up performance parts for this engine? Or would I be better off talking to the local auto engine rebuilders?

Thanks,
-Ron

Hey Ron, long time no talk to.

Some of this I know, some I don't so I'll answer what I do know.

1) The 302 block is basically the same but there have been some changes made in the heads, (i.e. valve sizes). The imbalance on the older 302's was 28 ounces, in 1982 that changed to 50 ounces (I think I have that in the right order, if I don't someone will correct me).

2)Any small block (302/351W) oil pan will work. Look at trucks since most do have a rear sump pan.

3) I'm not aware of ANY performance upgrades for the FMX. I've heard folks cuss em and I've heard folks say they're good. For my money I'd go with either a C6 or a C4, with the C6 my first choice. (Option would be the AOD).

4) Dunno, never used it.

Ron

The desktop dyno i have is not accurate, but it is usually within 10% either way., for instance, my 302 came from the factory at 200hp and 270lb-ft of torque. When i plugged the engine numbers into desktop dyno, it came out 185hp and 290lb-ft. pretty close for me.
Also keep in mind that the older 302's valvetrain is different from newer as now they come with roller cam's from the factory.
