Hi, today i start to have problems with my 1998 Expi 5.4L, I was in a heavy traffic congestion and notice the temp star to raise fast, i turn off the ac and suddenly temp drops to normal, but less than 2 min start to raise again fast, almost get to the red line on the gauge and again drops, all the way to work was in the same situation, more strange soon as i get to work and turn the engine off can't listen any sound like boiling water or any water leak or hot smell, thats make me think maybe the temp sensor its bad, i was told that maybe the upper radiator hose is bad too, if someone can tell me how to check the temp sensor going to be apreciate or if i have to change too the thermostat maybe is bad, not expensive part, but any advice going to be apreciate.
TX.
I check this morning and the reserv. tank of water was empty, but i going to change the thermo tomorrow. Also going to change the water pump, a=sometimes i note a little leak of water when i start the engine, leak came near the balancer from the water pump, hope not be to hard to change , if some one have a link about steps to follow to change the water pump going to be apreciate
TX
Hopefully it is only the t/stat. If you see coolant dripping from rhe front of the engine you need to identify the source and fix that first. Don't just throw money at it had hope to fix the problem. If you cannot identify the source of the problem you should take it to a reliable shop. I'm sure Diego Febles and his employees will be glad to sell you all the parts you are willing to pay for, but do it right the first time. Diagnose, then fix.
The water pump is an easy job.
1. Drain the coolant
2. You will need 2 large wrenches to remove the fan assenbly, just lay it in the shroud and then unbolt the shroud and lift off the radiator and out of the way. The threads are normal, loosen to the left and tighten to the right.
3. Release the belt tensioner and take the belt off the alternator. While you are there you should check the bearings on the tensioner and idler pulleys, replace them if tghey are loose or make noise.
4. Remove the water pump pulley bolts (4)
5. Remove the water pump bolts (5) and remove the punp by pulling straight out. It will be tight as the O-ring that seals it is the only seal there.
To install, just reverse the procedure.
Good luck with it.

Diego had a number of auto parts stores in Ponce and elsewhere in P.R. when I knew him.
