alright I have another problem, the other day I was heading to town and when I went to shift from second to third I couldn't get the truck to go into third gear. No grinding just would not go in gear. I went back to second rev. the engine alittle higher and went to 4th. Now 3rd gear is gone, can't get it to go in. 4th and 5th seem to be in different places everytime. I never grind the gears, float the gears, or even force the gears when shifting. Before this happened I never had a problem shifting the truck or even heard anything grind or pop. What is broke? The previous owner said he had to replace the shift pin not long before I bought the truck. Oh the truck is a 1988 F-150 300 6, with a 5 speed and 4x4. I appreciate any help.
I think your pickup has the M50R2 like mine does and you have a worn out shift fork. If you peel the carpet back and take off the trans cover and then you can take off the top cover to your trans and see if the 3-4 fork is shot.
Just reread the post and now not sure on the diagnosis, could just be the bushing for the shifter or the pins. You can get to that by taking the bood off and taking a look for anything out of place.
Sounds like one of the pins that hold the shifter in place on the tower has backed out. It happened to mine right before i swapped to a ZF. When it happens, it makes in hard to find gears, and 3rd was the hardest to find, hit and miss most of the time. Sometimes i'd roll to a stop in an intersection cause i could find a gear. people honking, It was scary.
thanks fordman 1090, that was it. the driver side pin had backed out. We drove it back in with a punch locktite and pinged it into place. I hope it holds. Now on to the sticking tailgate. got it down and realized that the springs in the driverside latch are rusted up. trying to get it cleaned up if not I will have to replace the latch. Will see what happens.
