97 2.3 5 Spd Tranny Problems

Well about 10k Miles ago i replaced the cluth on my ranger because it was wearing thin and i started getting some shifting problems. The clutch resolved the light pedal and tiny bit of catch, but my shift issue seams to be with some synchros or somehting. The first problem and probably most minor is that if i am cruising along in 4th or 5th gear and i need to downshift to 3rd gear to pass (laugh) or climb a hill, it grinds. I found that if i push in the clutch, then put shifter into second, then into third with the clutch down the same time, it goes in no trouble and i can use my 3rd gear. Now for the real problem. I normally park my truck in second gear and dont use the park brake because eh....its obnoxious. When i get in sometimes and push the clutch, start her up.....and i go to get out of second and into reverse or 1st, it lets me out of second but completely locks out of all other gears..... The shifter wont go into anything....push hard enough and it just grinds. Sometimes some careful coorsion will get me 1st or reverse but not without a little thud or jolt or something exciting. Usually i just shut the truck off, put it in the gear i need...and proceed on. It seems like once i get it movin in a gear it is perfectly fine the rest of the voyage except for the downshifting thing. Sounds like i just need tranny rebuild? synchos? Dynamite and busch light? Lets hear it...someone has to have had this happen.

Just a quick update, last night i was picking my sister up at the airport and i had to wait a while and when i went to go again after about 20 minutes (truck running the whole time in neutral) it would not go into any gears so i had to shut it off and go to 1st then go again. Seems like its getting worse and worse over time. help please!

sounds like it may be the syncros. probably time for a rebuild.

btw, hows the fluid level? needs to be at the bottom of the fill hole using ATF, NOT gear oil.

I am pretty sure it is synchos as well but i wanted some more opinions before i have a friend rebuild this thing. Seems like no one on here knows much about this item or something because normally a whole bunch of replies show up in just a few days. The fluid level is good, i also changed the fluid about a year or less ago. Made sure i used ATF too, my '75 f250 highboy is gear oil all around :-)

well, im kind of suprised no one else has posted on this topic. there are many people on this forum that know about these trannies.
i would give your brother the go ahead on the rebuild. do you have a rebuild kit to put in or just the syncros. IMO, might as well do the whole works while he is in there. good luck.
