I have an 04 F250 5.4L and I am looking for an air intake just not too many choices!!!! Does anyone know if the 6.8L V10's are compatible or an F150 5.4 or excursion....???? What is everyone's opinion on DRY vs OILED filters??? Any and all help is welcome. Thanks, ANDREW.
You cannot use CAI kits designed for the 6.8L V10 engine in the Super Duty/Excursion because the throttle body is not in the same location. Nor can you use CAI kits designed for the 5.4L V8 F150 because the OEM air intake tube feeds from the driver's side front fender. In short, you need to purchase a CAI specifically designed for your application.
There are many threads on the pro's and con's of oiled versus non-oiled air filters. I have a K&N CAI on my F350 with the 5.4L engine. Many will say not to use K&N products on a diesel engine but that does not apply to you.
The 5.4l uses a completely different intake tube than the 6.8l. On the 04' SD 5.4l vs 6.8l the airbox is the same but like I said the tube is different. The F-150s have a completely different setup than the SD. I have been running oiled filters for years with no trouble, you just can't be stupid and over oil them.
There's not many choices because in reality, objective data shows about all they do is add noise and (in the case of oiled gauze) reduce reliability. Many of us won't touch them.
