FUEL GAUGE PROBLEMS

I swapped engines from two 95 bronco's. when I started The good one I noticed that the gauge said it was empty. So I poored 7 gals. into the tank and it overflowed. O K jumping ahead. When I unplug the pigtail right above the rear axle, the gauge says it is full, but when I plug it back together it goes down to empty. Now someone has replaced the harness side of the connector. Im guessing the pump assembly was probably replaced too. except the two small wires are differant colors than the colors on the trucks harness. I am thinking, if I swapped the two smaller wires it will work right. With everting so expensive these days. I dont want to burn or blow something up. L I K E M E !
Any thoughts?

just have the battery disconnected when you change the wiring over. then make the change and hook the battery back up. its not going to send power into the tank and cause an explosion. i dont understand why it was altered in the first place. unless they bought the wrong pump and tried to make it work. its also possible the pump is the stock pump and the float has a hole in it.

now that i think about it i think the gauge always will read full when you unhook the connector. I am trying to remember back when i replaced my pump in my 88 bronco but that was 3-4 yrs ago.

let a few more chim in before you progress. I would also recommend you syphon out the fuel just incase you decide to drop the tank.
