fuel gauge issue

Recently I replaced the in tank fuel pumps and sender units in both of my trucks fuel tanks with Airtex branded ones ( i now know i should have gone motorcraft) .
My dilemma is this, all works well except that the fuel gauges now read in reverse (show empty when full and full when empty).
Would the simple remedy for this issue be to just swap the two wires around which go to the sender unit at some point?

I see that you have a 1989 F-150.

My guess is the new pump has the sender wired backwards or installed backwards.

No way to wire one wire backwards as only one wire runs to the gauge.
Sounds like he has installed a fuel sender for an Econoline van.

The 1989 Econoline van fuel gauge will read above "F" at 10 ohms from the sender and below "E" at 73 ohms.
The 1989 Econoline van uses the Bimetal strip type fuel gauge.

The 1989 F-series fuel gauge will read about "F" at 145 ohms and about "E" at 22 ohms.
The 1989 F-series uses the Magnetic type fuel gauge.

As you can see they work opposite of each other. We have ran into this on this site before but it has been a few years.

I wouldn't be able to to leave it like that. It would drive me nuts.

If someone ordered the wrong parts for your application then I would swap them out asap.

Its not the best but dropping the fuel tanks out is a bit of a pita. I contacted the place where I bought them and they have given me a full refund.

You've already done the hardest part which is remove it the first time. I would have anti-seized the bolts when reassembling so it should be much easier now. I replaced both tanks in my gravel driveway using a floor jack. Not terrible.

IIRC the '80-'86 pickups also worked this way. So that may be what parts you got.

You could change the E to an F and the F to an E on the gauge face....

Any progress with this? I too am looking at replace the sending unit--or rather the "fuels pump assembly"--truth is I can't make heads or tails of that contraption. I have the tank off, and I can see the bottom half of it--how is it anchored to the bottom of the tank?? There are no screws ar anything else visible from the outside bottom of the tank. Is it just glued on at the factory?? Thanks for any information.

Not sure what you drive but there is no fuel pump assembly hooked or glued to the bottom of the tank.
It just sets in the hole and may touch the bottom of the tank. There is a locking ring on top of the tank to hold it in position.

Thanks for the replies--I figured it out. There is indeed a mounting bracket attached to the inside bottom of the tank. It the assembly releases from it via two tabs.

I posted this photo and the resolution at this thread:
