Well, almost free. Today a friend gave me a set of MSD super conductor plug wires. They were used but still in very good shape. He couldn't even remember what they came off of. The only thing keeping me from using them on my '74 was the fact that the wires are set up for a distributor with male terminals and mine has female terminals.
I went to my favorite local parts store and told the guy that I was looking for a cap that would fit my truck with male terminals. He eventually found that the cap from a 70's model international looked about right. He didn't have one in his store, but he called the store across town and they had one. I drove over there and picked it up and then went home to get started. These wires were really long so I had to get creative with the routing, but ultimately I got it worked out.
Net HP gain = 0 I'm sure, but it allowed me to get my favorite brand of plug wires for the cost of a distributor cap!
Would your user name indicate that you have a '92 Corvette? I have two in my garage right now. One is mine, the other I am storing for a friend until I have enough money to make it mine.
Yeah, agree the routing isn't ideal there. In fact when I first fired it up, one of the wires had the linkage jammed just enough to not not allow the throttle to fully close. I reworked it a little and used my wire dividers to make sure everything is clear and stays that way.
The guy who gave them to me also suggested that we could shorten the wires, but we could not get the boots to slide up the wire, or even twist. There is evidence on some of the boots that they have been hot, so I'm guessing that although they might have been movable when new, they're not anymore. Eventually when money permits I'll either get a universal set and make them the right length, or I'll get a set specific to this application and go back to the female terminal cap. For the time being though I couldn't pass them up, and I sure didn't want to ruin them.
My old cap and wires did NOT make it to the trash can, I kept them just in case.
