i have a 2001 F350 4x4 V10 5 speed. It had factory exhaust, But i put a wrecker rig on it and had to take the y pipe off(to install my pto. I put duel 2 1/2 inch exhaust and 2 mufflers on it. Now it seems like my fuel millage(down to 4-5 mpg) and how it performs isnt as well as it was. Where i took the y pipe off would that cause it? Not enough back pressure. Ive been looking everywhere all junkyards i could can find half way close to me but no one has any. If any one could tell me where i can get a y pipe i would appreicate it...also if the y pipe is the problem. Please tell me
Depending on how much that wrecker rig weighs, that may be a part of your problem. You may also be losing some through the PTO. As for the exhaust, I would think you would be ahead of the game having gone to a dual exhaust.
well the rig weighs about 3k. It gets worse mpg when using the pto. But this is normal driving. If i remember right. It used to get around 14? When it was just a 12ft flatbed. Ive talked to a few other mechanics and they're telling me that its where there is no back pressure. Which i do know some vehicles that has to have the back pressure. I thought that if it breathed better in and out. i would get better mpg and horsepower. But it seems like i lost it.
3k in itself won't do it, but what about driving style? As a tow truck, I would imagine you're spending most of your time in city traffic, stop and go driving instead of cruising down the highway.
Im in the country. Not alot of stop and go traffic... Mostly crusin around 55. ITs TRUE duels. 2 1/2 in from manifolds back to cheap muffler then out infront of duel wheels on both sides.
It is possible that your exhaust has reduced your mileage, but a 10mpg (70%) loss would lead to me expect other problems. Do the normal tune up stuff and see where you are at afterwards. Air/Fuel/Oil filter, spark plugs, check your tire pressures, check for vacuum leaks, clean the maf and IAC.
Then Try not using your PTO for a decent trip (long enough to get half decent fuel data.)
ITs got a fresh oil change. Air filter isnt but few months old. MAbye 3k miles on air filter. Also has new fuel pump and fuel filter. Got new motorcraft plugs for it. Havent got to put them in yet. All tires aired up. Cleaned the maf before also. Didnt help. Havent check for vaccum leaks though.
Well Y-day i finally got the y pipe and cat. and new flomaster series 40 out with 2 duels with 3 inch tips. Sounds ok. not too impressed. Havent got to drive it enough to see if it helped the gas milege yet. will post when i find out.
