Rear end ratio options

So I was building my own cyberspace truck and noticed that the highest rear end ratio I could go with a dually was 3.73. The other options I saw were a 3.31 and a 3.55. Is this true? Is this the solution to increase mpg? A diesel truck with a 3.31 or 3.55, seriously? What about those of us that want to tow something? They also upped the 5th wheel tow capacity with the 3.73. How can they let you tow more when nothing changed? Even the 450 is stuck with a 3.73. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Well after doing some more digging it seems there is contradictory info on their web site. When I build a 450 it shows the 4.30 as an option but under the towing section it isnt an option for the 450 with the diesel.

I was told that the reason for such high rear end gears is because of the new six speed tranny. ?????

I have seen that talked about some the more research I do. I don't quite understand it though.

Take a look at the gear ratios in the transmission before you make any final verdict. I don't know what they are, but having 6 gears to play with can give you more of a spread than you might think.

I think all 450's are 4.30 gears.

I believe the new 6spd has a 3.97 first, which would make overall gearing lower than previous years.

That is correct according to the December spec sheet.
4.30 limited slip standard for F-450

When I ordered my truck I was told I only had the option of 3.31 gears due to one of my options I picked (not sure which), I could pick either Electronic locking or Non Limited slip. I took the Electronic Locking option and I hope I am not going to be disappointed with the 3.31 gears on my new truck.

you can always switch those gears out on the aftermarket if they don't work. I have been playing with the website as well and encoutered the same thing.

Very true, I will probably end up going to 4.10's once a lift kit comes out for the 2011's. That way I can put it on some 37 inch tires for the desert.

Based on this calculator Potential Engine Speed (RPM) Calculator

The new diesel would redline in 1st at 22mph with the 4.3 diff (4000rpm)
29mph with the 3.31 diff. I would go for the 3.31 E-locker.

(based on Tire diameter 32.1")

With the 6.7L, 3.55 e-locking is only available on the F-250 if you get the 4x4 option and one of these: heavy service front suspension, heavy service for pickup box delete, snow plow prep or camper package.

I got the 3.31 e-locking on my truck.
I am still a little apprehensive about it but we'll see.
Like senix said, they can be swapped later except a little more costly with a 4x4.

Well if it makes you feel any better, when the trucks were being tested the 3.31 gear ratio got 28mpg (admittedly driven like a grandma)

With my lead foot I should be able to take 28 mpg down to 7 mpg.
