1997 F250HD 4x4 460cid ZF5 close ration trans. Whenever I start my truck, especially on a cold morning I hear a horrible screeching and whining noise that sounds like it's coming from the front of the trans. It goes away instantly if I just put some weight on the clutch. I don't neccesarily have to depress it all the way, just a little pressure on it. This noise also becomes prevalent when i'm driving at low RPM's. If I just lay my foot on the clutch pedal, it kind of goes away....
So I'm thinking input shaft? Or is it the throw-out bearing?
Or do I just buy the clutch kit and not worry about what bearing it is?
It's been making the noise for about 2 years, i've finally convinced myself that it will in fact break one day and want to get it fixed.
Yeah, mine started out mild. But it's gotten to the point where people pulled up beside me notice it. I guess i've just gotten used to it. A good clutch kit is less that $300, I think I might just go ahead and change the whole thing while I'm in there. Looking at the breakout, it looks like most of it has to come out anyway.
