on my 88, when i have the headlights on, i have a hot-spot on the steering column, and i smell something burning.. headlights still work..is it just the turn signal/hi-beam switch, or the turn signal hi-beam switch and wiper switch, are they all integrated? my truck is now going through the electrical problem phase of it's life..just had to replace the t/s flasher..not too bad getting 22 years out of one of those, also had a couple bulbs in the instrument cluster burn out..and It eats radios for some reason.. every radio i've put in there has started screwing up in one way or another.. i've checked the heck out of the wiring for shorts, and i have grounded the crap out of the deck..
Look in the owners manual for the location of the headlamp relay. It should be in the fuse cluster. That might be the cause. The relay supplies high amps to the lights so the headlight switch does not have to carry a high amp load to power the headlights.
Disregard the above post. The switch still carries the full load of the hadlights. The solution is to install a headlight relay kit. The kits are based upon the type of bulbs your setup uses. So for example, if your vehicle were to use a 9007 bulb, you would get a harness that is made for the 9007. These kits take the electrical load off the switch, to the switch only acts as a trigger. It has the added benefit of making the headlights brighter.
sorry for the late reply..been busy at work..I figured it was the whole switch assy... i need to replace it soon.. now the lights are starting to blink on and off every now and then..atleast the burning smell stopped.. i guess whatever was burning inside that switch is fully toasted now..still have the hot spot on the column..thanks for the help
LMC truck carries a relay kit that is simple to install. The burning in that area will come back otherwise. You might have some spade lug sockets ready to repair your connections to the multifunction switch.
