HI !
I was driving home from work today & stopped at crossroad.
I started off & there was a bang then *no drive*, checked driveshaft,it was turning but that was all.
I suspected a broken axle,so I put it in FWD high range & went home in front wheel drive only.
My questons:
1)Will this be ok for a few days driving in front drive only?
I have got two spare axles from a earlier f100 1969 two wheel drive.
2)Are these the same the number of splines and length?
If it's a 9" rear don't try it. Depending on what broke and where, you have a chance of losing the whole axle, meaning with the added stress on the axle bearing (that holds the axle in) the bearing could fail and the axle leave the housing. Not a pretty sight. Also the pieces floating around in the rear end WILL do a number on the ring and pinion and the bearings. I wouldn't take the chance.

Ditto with Macguyver. Park it till you pull it down. I assume you are saying you have a 100-150 since the replacement axles you have are for a 100. You do not list your model, ratio, driveline, etc.
Hey Bob, I wasn't knocking you for getting home in front wheel drive. We've all done something similar. Just don't expect it to hold up on a commute when you really need it. You know Murphy's Law!

thanks fellers
sorry about not saying what type its a 1978 f100 FWD 351 C
manual box
checked the diff over the weekend, it was the splines only
that wore out does this happen often?
used diff cost $750.00 au axles $175.00 each.
thanks again Bob.
You don't have to replace the diff. Pull the broken spline section out. Find a matching axle and reinstall. Simple, just lots of busted knuckles and greasy bolts:-)
You did say the splines wore out and didn't actually break off near the end of the axle right? If that happened then there will be more to replace than just an axle. There is surely wear on the differential as well.
You say the axle splines wore off? If you look at the axle, the splines are worn down flat? Well, all that metal had to go somewhere and it probably went into the axle oil, and will likely find it's way into the ring and pinion. You need to dump the oil and clean out all the metal, which could be anywhere. Also check the side gear that axle went into as it's probably shot as well.
Seriously, metal pieces small enough to circulate with the axle oil can still be big enough to cause a nasty headache if it gets into the ring and pinion, and if you drive it around that way with front drive, it's a big possibility. Cleaning it out is fairly easy.
alls well yes the splines were well worn on both the axle and gear
had a spare 9 inch but it is 370 ratio so will have to give up FWD for a while, will do up the original diff with new parts and a new clutch pak.
thanks Bob.
Sorry- my mistake, I have have had a diff go "bang" on me and the splines were polished looking but it was the axle that had twisted off. If the splines are worn down of course you would have to replace the entire diff.
Anytime a bearing, shaft, or gear fails it will leave metal particles that must be cleaned and flushed out. I always use a magnet or magnetic drain plug to catch metal fragments also. A magnetic drain plug can be examined whenever you check the axle/transmission and any quantity of particles picked up generally means problems...
If you look closely at your old old and it has sort of a shiney sheen to it, that's metal. If so it's gone through everything including the wheel bearings.
