Tow/Haul Mode

I have a 2008 F-250 6.4L PSD w/automatic, and I was wondering if running it in Tow/Haul mode while not hauling will hurt the transmission? It's great to have that engine braking with some of the crazy traffic we have.

It won't hurt the trans to run in or out of tow/haul when you are towing or not. The trans is protected no matter which mode it's in.

The only thing you will hurt is your MPG.

Depending on how you drive, it might mildly effect your gas mileage some but safe to run if you choose.

My 2005 F350 has the 5.4L engine and 4.10 gears. I run my truck in Tow/Haul mode all the time. When driving in the city at speeds of 35-45 MPH with the Tow/Haul is OFF, the Torqshift will select a gear that puts the engine in the 1,300 RPM range and the truck feels sluggish. However, when the Tow/Haul is ON, the engine is in the 1,800 RPM range and the truck feels very responsive. At highway speeds, the only time that I know the Tow/Haul in ON is when I hit a grade and the Torqshift downshifts at the appropriate time to keep the engine in the power band. In short, I prefer the shift strategy of the Tow/Haul mode in all conditions.

I've noticed that TFT also seems to run a little hotter with T/H engaged versus not engaged. Not dangerous hot, just hotter.
