Wipers won't work

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...or-washer.html

Thought I would move this to a new section and see if I get any better response. Thanks for any help!

The reason you found +12 volts at the motor is that this system appears to be controlled by ground switching, not "hot".

Here's a wiring diagram for you to begin with:
http://www.e-toolbox.com/ads/wiring/va153582.pdf

I believe that "solid state" is part of the GEM.

Just went through this myself, my washer fluid wouldn't spray and the intermittent wipers wouldn't work. On my late 99 there were 3 relays under the hood, 33,34 and 35 try switching them to see if it changes. They are all the same part numbers so take one out and bring it in to ford, the number cross referenced 5 times and now it is a Bosch part number. Hope this helps

Take it to Ford only if you want to pay about four times the street price for those relays.

Any auto stereo or alarm place will have the Bosch relays. They are a very standard item, and may also have a mounting tab that needs to be cut off before use.

However, it's unlikely that the relays are the cause. All of the actuator coils are powered by a single source, and THAT's what I would insure first had +12 volts.

Thanks for the help guys! As for the relay issue it seems to me that all relays and fuses are in the same place (under the dash in the fuse box). According to my owners manual none of the relays under the dash have anything to do with the wipers. Are there more relays under the hood? I have looked and don't see any. Appears that atleast for the 99 SD part of the relays were under the hood and part under the dash. I did p/u a used switch today......will see what happens.

There are relays in places that aren't normally accessible at all. I know where the power window relays are, but not those for the wipers.

I'm not likely to be of much further help on this one.

I'm not sure on this but I believe in the 2002-2003 there are some relays behind the radio. If you have the radio removal tools (available at most auto parts stores) it is easy to slide it out to check.

Update

Well.........It's not the switch! Replaced it and still no wipers! Looking at the owners guide and it lables the relays in the fuse box as:

#301=Front Blower Motor
#302=Powertrain (EEC)
#303=Injector drive module
#304=Heated backlite
#305=Trailer tow battery charge
#306=Delayed accessory relay
#307=Starter

I would assume that the wipers would run through a relay, BUT I don't see it! If anyone knows please advise.

I had not mentioned it, but when I changed the wiper motor I plugged it in and turned on the switch to see if it worked (didn't) and I could hear a clicking sound in the motor everytime I turned it on or pushed the wash button. Not a clicking sound like the gears, but more like the sound a relay makes when it activates. Again the sound seem to be coming from the motor (new motor).

Looking at the link Pop provided in post #2 there are two relays involved with wiper movement. 1) Wiper High/Low and 2) Wiper Run/Park. Were you able to check behind the radio as I suggested in post #8?

Not sure how different the 2002 are but my fuse/relay box is right next to the brake master cylinder. Between the master and the quarter panel.

Robin,

If you mean the ones on the firewall, to the left and a bit lower than the radio, three are the power door lock relays, and one is the "park lights flash" relay (when you hit the clicker twice to confirm LOCK). Seen here:

There is a small enclosure on the other side of the panel bracing that's forward of the driver's right knee that also contains relays, but I'm not sure of their function. That brace (but not the enclosure) can be seen in this photo:
http://springerpop.net/F350/images/UserWires.jpg
but is on the far side.

Tom,

Yes, mine are where yours are at, but they moved everything inside beginning (I think) in 2002.

Have not looked yet. Need to get the radio out. I did use a light and looked from the bottom of the dash up behind the radio. I could see pretty well (could see the back of the radio) and didn't see anything that looked like a relay. I will pull the radio when I get the chance and see for sure.

Thanks Pop.

It sure is a hide-in-seek game when it comes to relays that aren't listed on the relay and fusing block diagram.
