Hello everyone, I'm new here and a proudly owner of a used Explorer 2005 4.6 liters limited, this thing sure rides very well ! BUT:
1- Whine in the rear differential: it has the tow package, 3.73 open gear (#46 axle), 55000 miles, I just replace the oil in the rear differential (Motorcraft synthetic 75W140) and no difference... I decided to just drive it...
2- Can anyone tell me where is the factory hardness plug for an electric brake module ?!!! Since I have the tow package, I just order an adapter for my electric brake module BUT I CAN'T FIND IT !!!
OUr mountaineer has the rear diff whine too, I may get it fixed someday if it isn't to expensive. Brake controller harness on my mountaineer was behind the glovebox. It also had the adapter harness still in the bag in the back stowed away with the jack.
the whine is often due to gear mesh and not bearings. thats why it will run for years without problems or failure.. to change the pitch, you need to modify something with the gear mesh. i have added 1 or 2 tubes of the limit slip friction modifier to the rear axle oil which changes the viscosity and makes the oil more "slippery?" that seems to have changed the pitch of the noise. mine mostly occured at 60-65 MPH. kind of goes away above 70 or below 50 MPH... that tells you its not bearing failure.. Cant guarantee it will work for you, but changing the oil addative might help.
Like steve said, a gear whine is not something to really get too worried about. It will live a LONG time whining....Now a bearing noise is something that would need to be addressed.
Thank you very much everyone ! And very quickly for the brake controller hardness... today I drive my camping trailer and I really appreciated the electric brake (the connector was indeed well hidden behind the glovebox). And true, the rear diff whine stops below 45-50 mph so I'm gone be in peace and try the limit slip friction modifier someday, I'm sure it will do only good.
Thanks again, I'm gone be here often !!!
