Very low MPG Reading

My dash LED (computer) shows that I am consistently getting 13.5 - 14.5 MPG. Even when I reset the program and drive extremely conservative, I can never break the 15 MPG barrier. Anyone else having this problem? Seeing folks post that they are getting 17-20 is making me nervous that something is wrong with my truck.

Please, no comments on personal calculations, I'm specifically looking for feedback on the internal-based calculations on the Ford LED dash.

Data on my truck:

2009 F150 SuperCrew Lariat 4x4, 5.4L, 3.55 axle, over 13K miles since bought in July 2009. Only change to factory is a Daystar leveling kit but the MPG reading was the same before and after the kit.

Thanks,
BB

If you're running larger-than-stock tire, and the speedometer is off, that could be partly to blame...

Otherwise, if you see a lot of stop & go traffic, 13-14 MPG seems on the low side of reasonable.

My truck started at 12MPG on the computer then over the first 10K it went to 15MPG now at 29K it's at 16MPG. I did a hand calculation also and found that my computer was super close within 1/2 mile. I have a little larger tires but had the dealership set computer for the larger tires. I also found that when I ran E85 in the truck I would get less MPGs then when I run 100% gas, in Maryland there is little or no difference in price so I run the good stuff. Chris

cheap gas normally has more ethanol content, which allows the gas station to dilute it with some water...Can cause worse mileage. Also, Keep your foot out of it. Are you low on oil? cold climate? there are a lot of different factors. Someone in a previous thread mentioned something about a sensor in the intake tube being easily knocked, which could cause false air/fuel mixture, resulting in lousy mileage.

Thanks for the responses. To answer some of your questions:

original stock tires/wheels, no lead foot, not cold here in Texas, not low on oil, not using cheap gas nor E85. I'll try to take it by the Ford dealer this week.

Any other folks seeing low mileage?

Bullet,

My brand new 5.4 is readin 16mpg in mosly in town driving so far. It this is like my old 4.6, it will improve 4+ mpg on average by 10K miles. What you are seeing is a little lower than mine, but I don't have the 4 wheel drive, which makes a 1-2mpg difference, from what I understand.

BTW, has anyone run the E-85 through the 5.4? What were the results-power and mpg?

I have a 09 Lariat with 3.73 gears and 5.4 motor. I live in Salt Lake City. The truck has 6700 miles on it.

City driving 14-15 mpg

Freeway (65-75mph) 151/2 - 16 mpg

New by pass freeway that has a speed limit of 55 and strictly enforced. I get 19mpg on it.

For my truck the happy speed is 50-55 mph.

IMO, owning a 4 X 4 is great for pulling boats out of the water, off-road and in the snow but there is a price to pay and that is a little less MPG. Also, the types of roads you drive(hills) could have a negative impact. Seems to me you have a great truck that will do a lot of things a 4 X 2 will not, except better gas mileage.

I have a 2010 Lariat Screw with just about 1000 miles on it and my onboard computer says I am averaging 17 - that is a combination of rural hilly Maine roads and highway miles.

My driving is probably 70% city and 30% highway. Reset the computer and it is just under 13 after a few days of driving.

I'll see if it improves by the end of the week before I make a long trip (~7hrs) pulling 5000lbs.
