Anyone tried a tractor paint on their chassis? I have tons of the stuff and I like how you can just paint it on with a brush and roller. I can't paint with a spray gun but I've started a tremclad rust coverup/repair+bondo job to get a farm truck roadworthy because my DD was just totaled when someone loosened my lugs and want to get it finished before the 20th. Any ideas if this one's a fail waiting to happen?
Tractor paint is tough stuff mostly made from high quality enamel's and would be a good choice if you have it already, why go buy 150 bucks of auto paint when you do not need to! It will not last forever, it's not as hard as auto paints that you would add a hardener to as your mixing it.
The fail part is all in the prep.
Passed the Ford tractor place on the way into town last night. Seems they're selling a new tractor that's retro'd out to look like an old 8N. Gray/red paint scheme and the whole deal.
I just checked it out, and they're even calling it an 8N
Thanks for the link! Very interesting! I have a 8N that I restored on 06. Lots of even thou I live within a city. I do trailer to a friends farm land 2 or 3 times a year to help him bring in the hay. Still a working tractor!
Does this paint hold up good against road salt? I just want to paint it once and never need to pull the body off again. BTW I'm in Saskatchewan so my idea of salted roads might be a little different we just got 1/2" of snow and blizzard warnings two days ago.

Check to see if you product is a polyurethane enamel or not... if NOT i would use a poly product such as Dupont Imron. good stuff! thats what i used on my frame and you can get it in a semi-gloss finish.
Havn't seen a chassis painted with farm paint; plan on spraying my 64 body woth Blitz Black from John Deere, a buddy did a fox body mustange and it was sharp as a tack.
I've used Hammer paint from Rustoleum on my last two frame's and shot it about 2/3rds paint 1/3rd thinner.

Mitch
Thats really thin with 1/3 thinner did it take alot of coats?
it helps with flow, any where from 20 to 30% reducer is good
3 coats maybe 2 thin tacky coats and one full wet coat for your final.
if you spray it....

Bascially Bill; answer my post; I'm sure different type guns will shot better, I use a primer type gun , I shoot 4 coats total; seems to be tough enough!!

Saskpwr,
Is your plan to brush the tractor paint on your frame/chassis?
If so, I'd be calling with the paint manufacturer to discuss your plans as some paints are designed to be SPRAYED ONLY for the best results.
What is the product brand name of your tractor paint?
Saskpwr,
I have been looking into new paints for my frame too. I live in DC but travel a lot to northern PA where there is a LOT of salt used. A suggestion from my buddy in Key West was to use the two part epoxy boat paints. Just brush or roll, can be reduced as well. But when it hardens, you need a chisel to get the crap off. It also has the rust inhibitor in it. He also runs a body shop there, so he knows the issues of salt on the chasis.
Just an idea. And you can get it online from several boating stores.
