I'm new to the forum and to 7.3's so let me thank you in advance for any all help you can provide.
I have a 95 with a ZF 5 speed and it just developed an oil leak that I can't find.
Its in the rear and its not those three plugs on either head, I can feel and see those. My valley is clean (just a little fuel leak), but no oil. Its going down all over the back on both sides and its is oil, (some thought it might be diesel). My valve covers have new gaskets and they seem to be good. I really can't get my hands down in there or a camera. It looks from underneath to be running down the bottoms of the exhaust manifolds if that helps. Under the turbo in the valley is clean. How would I tell if its the exhaust warm up valve o rings? That's the only thing I can think of.
Also.....I'm in Fairbanks AK and I'm a student so my shop access is limited, so how hard is it to pull the turbo and rebuild the warm up valve if that's it?
Lastly I have the warm up valve on a switch for an exhaust brake would this wear it out more or cause the o rings to go out quickly?
Thank you guys so much for the help. This is my new sled/samurai hauler and I've been very pleased with it so far.
Just let me know if you want more details. (I've read as much as I could on other threads)
have you checked the high pressure oil rail end plugs! each head has one front and back about 1 1/4 inch plug
ford P/N 4C3Z-6026-CA
comes in a pack of 4 for a good reason if one is leaking the others will soon leak also.
the original had black rubber seals that didn't last, the new ones have blue seals that seem to last longer.
Is it only from the oil pan and down that it's wet or all over the back of the block?
Either way, I'd pull the clutch cover and look for a slice on the back of the oil pan from it. If someone put it back on just the least little bit wrong then it will eat a groove all the way across the back of the oil pan. My son put mine on when we replaced the clutch and I looked at it. It looked right. A week later though, it was puking a quart a minute out the back of the oil pan.
I did that yesterday. I pulled the clutch cover because the clutch had just been replaced last year. All of the oil is coming from above and its all over the top of the tranny. I first thought rear main because it was dripping from the cover, but its just running down insideand out the bottom.
If it was warm up valve rod should I see oil where the rod comes out or can it leak somewhere underneath, because I can see the rod and where it goes in and its clean, so maybe it is the pedastil o rings. I just got a mirror wand so I'll try and see the back better. But I thought if the pedastil o rings where leaking it would fill the valley or at least drip in there, is that a wrong assumption.
Thanks,
and what manual source would you guys recommend?
Thanks alot for the help I'm going out to tear into it.
The motor slants back at a pretty good angle so any oil that is leaking back there is just going to go back as far as it has to to go down. You might now notice a much in the valley because of this.
I use this site as a good manual source most of the time. I can't remember the manual I had bookmarked but I lost them. It was chilton I think, like f-series and bronco repair manual.
If you find the source to the leak please let me know. I put in a smf clutch last weekend and also noticed I have a leak. Looked in the valley and mine was bone dry. Thought it may be running down thru the hole in the valley and coming out the hole right above the starter. But it wasn't. When I had my transmission out,I cleaned up everything. Overnight, I noticed some oil had run down the passenger side of the engine. From the oil pan area down. It wasn't the rear main seal as I'd originally thought. Mine is somewhere on the passengr side and gets around the starter and runs down in and around the clutch inspection plate. Anyways good luck on finding it, if I find it before I see you're post I'll let you know.
I pulled the turbo and it looks fine I can't see where it would have been leaking. I'm getting a little frustrated because my oil galley plugs are clean and dry and turbo pedastal and the turbo mount look clean. The exhaust warm up looks clean too. I have an innercooler upgrade and I checked to see if the turbo was leaking and filling it up but its clean too.
The real oily part looks like it starts at the edge of intake runners, and the right side intake pipe where it attaches to the collector looks oily and it looks like run down the pipe and drips off.
Also can oil leak out of the top of the dip stick?
When my o rings were shot between the block and ped the valley was dry but the top of my trans was soaked on the top the way I found it was getting up on the motor on my belly reaching back behind the turbo and feeling for oil when the engine is cold of course lol.
also to answer your ? about oil leaking from the top of your dipstick no it should not unless your crank case vent is plugged, or something internally wrong with the motor causing extreme crank case pressure.

Thanks a million WALJON you make me feel a lot better!!
I just figured if the o rings on the base were leaking it would run around on the top of the valley and in. I'm replacing my fuel pump right now while everything is apart but in the next few days I'll know if that was it.
All I tell myself is
1. If the galley plugs in the rear aren't leaking
2. I replace all the turbo o rings
3. My warm up valve isn't leaking
4. All my high pressure oil lines on top aren't leaking
then I should be good to go because there is no other place for it to come from.
