I am going to look at a 80-86 f150 (can't remem year i was told). Has the 4.9 engine but the Truck doesn't engage by what the owner is saying in 4 wheel. Two wheel works but no 4 wheel. To me it sounds like the chain but i am not sure. The guy only wants 875 and it doesn't have alot of rust. IS this a common prob with this transfer case or what....how much is i chain going to cost usally...
if it is the t case, i would just get a used one and put it in. a whole lot less trouble. takes about an hour or hour and half. BUT, it is probably a lockout not working. a lot of people just pull the gears out when they mess up and never get around to puting them back in.
I agree with Jim on both: it's cheaper/easier to replace the t-case and it's probably a bad auto-locking hub. I've abused the $#!%@*) out of my t-case and it's one of the few original, never-rebuilt parts on my truck. (...maybe the ONLY!)
They are the manual hubs up front so i dunno if the teeth in them might be stripped. But i was planning on putting it in 4 wheel high and low and have my dad watch to see if the driveshaft is turning up front or not. If i get a replacement one from a scrapyard what vehicles can i get one from... Could it be from a POS Gm or does have to be a strictly Ford thing.
I agree, don't panic, and check it out. That's how I got my 1980 f150 for $300.00. Somebody told the guy I bought it from that it was probably the chain in the transfer case. I got it home and it WAS the manual locking hub on the passenger side. If one hub is broke, it's not going to work. Turns out somebody didn't install the locknuts on the the wheel bearings correctly, and they worked their way out and chewed up the hub.
got the truck home but it is the transfer case prob...i am goin to pull of the tcase friday afternoon and see what the prob is...hopefully just a chain.
Got the tcase all apart laying in the bed of the truck and come to fine out from my dad the gear was just stuck that locks it into 4 wheel. There were some burs on the teeth keeping it from moving back and fourth. So he took a stone and cleaned them up. He thinks it is from someone shifting on the go to much in 4 wheel. I am ordering some seals & gaskets today so i can out it back together and get her on the road. I keep making fun of my mom because she thought it was too expensive for 700. The engine (4.9) diesn't make any noise at all even when cold started. This made a good day even better. Thanks for the replys.
