Question Ok...where am I going wrong with measuring?

I have a stock dana 44 rear axle thats in my 51 right now that measures 55 1/2 to 56 inches from where the housing bolts to the drum/brake flange to the other flange. OK that said I measured the 9 inch that I bought a few years ago that I thought was to wide and it measures 61 inches from where the housing bolts to the drum/brake flange to the other flange. I read the article on the sight about the right widths for our trucks that should be right around 60 inches.....but my original is 56 inches wide....I have had 2 51 ford trucks with dana 44s and they measure the same 55-56 inches.....so what am I doing wrong?

You might double check the info on the 9" that you read because they might be referring to the 61 inches as being from the wheel mounting surface to the other wheel mounting surface, not to the backing plate. Just my guess.

Good guess, I think you are right.
61 inches is the tread / track width. The 61 inch 9 Inch housing is too wide by the time you add the axle and drum thickness.

Yeah that stinks oh well I'll just try to sell the 9 I have for one thats the right size and I guess keep the original rear end in till I find one, It is actually hard to find 9 inch out of a 57-72 truck around where I live for some reason.

Reed, I got fooled the same -- bought a 9" that is from a early-80's Bronco. Same bolt pattern and the same width you measure. Easy to sell, and mine has a nodular center section. I found a correct 9" for $50 a couple weeks later.

Always measure a rear end from wheel-mounting-surface to wheel-mounting-surface NOT backing plate-to-backing-plate since the width of brake drums varies from one application to another. In the old days when all rear ends had two inch brake shoes it didn't matter but later rear ends have wider brake shoes and drums...
