Has anyone else had trouble with the rear wiper? Mine won't return to it's resting spot. I originally thought it had loosened up so I removed it, ran the motor thru a few cycles and replaced it. Tight! Then, ran it again and it wouldn't return. Thinking I might have moved it I took it off again and reset it. It worked for a while but now wont return. Took the truck to be washed. The washer flipped my rear wiper and it came to rest outside of it's perch, considerably further down from it's detent position! It took some effort to get it back where it belongs. Ran it again but it won't return to rest. Sets on my rear window. Ran my washer which usually nets 3 or more swipes but would only do one swipe regardless of how much fluid I spewed..... What the heck is going on???
There have been many issues with the rear wiper motors. I had an issue with my wiper only working on occasion. Took it to the dealership and had the motor replaced.
Then, it would not wipe the full distance, and was in the rest position heavy! It was pulling down on the stopper. The dealership then removed the arm and adjusted. Now it works like a charm.
Advise, take it to the dealership and have them replace the motor.
I'm on my third rear wiper motor and my EXp. only has 45k miles on it. As far as I'm concerned it is an ornament. If I ever have bodywork done to the liftback, I will remove the motor entirely and fill in the holes. I don't even bother to use it but my wife likes to use it. The first time it failed it was under warranty, the last time, dealer replaced motor at cost of $219 and they vehemently deny that this is a common problem. It is the extremely poor reliability of components like this that irritate me with the Expedition.
By the way does anyone know if there is an aftermarket rear wiper motor available?
My wife, who usually drives the '99 Expy, has complained on several occasions about the rear wiper not working. The few times I've driven it and had occasion to use it, it seem to travel very slow but works. Seems most other vehicles with rear wipers including our old Aerostar, have a much faster sweep rate. Impending failure?
Last time when I had the rear wiper motor replaced ( out of warranty) the Ford dealer charged me $219.00. Next time it goes I won't bother anymore. I will simply remove it and have the holes on the tailgate filled in and repaint the tailgate.
Rob,
The motor was $81 and an hour's labor. $151 including shop supplies and tax.
The warranty from Platinum Warranty (their highest level of coverage for 3/36) was $999 with $0 deductible.
This fix cost me $22. Platinum pays the part and Chilton's labor. They give .8 hours, my local Ford garage charged an hour. I pay the difference. Still, $22 for a $151 bill I can deal with.
The rear wiper on my 98 gradually slowed down until it stopped entirely (sounds similar to the slow sweep rate others describe). It took it apart and found the shaft was siezed to the housing due to water getting past the poorly designed seal. A little scotch-brite on the shaft and bushings, and some fresh grease and its good as new. I would have just replaced it but the dealer wanted $85...for a wiper motor? This repair might be an alternative for DIYers who are out of warranty.
