I have just recently acquired a 1986 F150 with a fuel injected 5.0 and a manual 3 speed with overdrive and have a few questions to those who happen to be more knowledgeable on the subject.
1st: I have no idea which transmission this is, on the door code it says it is a "B" transmission, but I have not been able to figure out what exactly that is.
2nd: This truck leaks everywhere, transmission to transfer case, rear-end, rear main seal, and a few other places. I want to fix the transmission to transfer case leak and would like to know if it is likely to just be the gasket between the two, or the rear main transmission seal too.
3rd: I would like to upgrade the exhaust system, due to a number of leaks and annoying back-pressure popping. If I switch to headers with a dual exhaust and remove the cats, will I have to do any rewiring to not throw codes or experience a loss of performance?
That is pretty much all I can think of right now, and any input will be greatly appreciated.
Im not sure of the trans, ive got a C6 in my 86.
Its most likely the rear main seal and the shaft seals out of the transfer case.
You will only have to worry about the o2 sensors for the exhaust
The literature I can find calls your 4 speed a "clark 4 speed", but I believe you might have what's commonly known as the "RUG". You should have a tag on the tranny with RUG on it. If it is the RUG, then it's loosely related to the old toploader 4 speeds, but they turned some of the gears around and made the 4th gear a overdrive.
Thanks for the info guys. I have have a top-loader in my 69 mustang that has been rock solid, so hopefully this transmission will prove to be of the same quality.
