I put in a new thermostat, while it was running I put a screwdriver on the top hose to snug um down and the distributor gave me a shock ..about like an elec fence
The sound is coming from inside the plastic cap..you can hear it great with a screw driver to your ear
If i put it below on the shaft you can BARLEY hear it...seems to me if it was bad gear engagement on the cam it would be loud on the shaft/neck below the cap
in the center of the cap there is a shaft that runs top to bottom supported by 2 bushings and spins verry fast
there is very tight tolerances within the distributor and you could be getting some contact causing the noise.
But it stops when I unplug the vacuum hose that is hooked up to the closest port on that thing on the distributor. Idles higher and the zinging stops...

I would have posted sooner but the visual I have of the screw driver to your ear, and the earlier post of getting shocked Blew my stitches out and the Doc had to replace them. The phsychiatrist at the hospital could'nt get me to stop laughing so I had to stay there a couple of extra days. It was only then that I could draw a picture of a guy getting shocked.....then....putting the screw driver to his ear for yet another shock. Anyway sorry for the interruption. You guy's kill me!!!
