first diesel

i purchased my first diesel truck yesterdy, a 2001 f350 crew cab dually,114000 miles, lairiat package, i am the third owner, the second one only had the truck for 8 months but it looks like they never did any maintence or cleaning. i cant contact the original owner but it looks like it has an ats turbo, snow performance methanol injection, and some paper work showing a transmission from brians truck shop installed by a local trans shop at 88,000 mi.
what is the methanol injection and when would i use it? there is a switch on the dash for it. and second can i steam clean the motor or is that not a good idea ? the dealer i got it from did an oil change and replaced the k&n air filter that was crushed with a new one, anything else i need to check?

Welcome to FTE! Hopefully someone can answer about the methanol injection. Why do you want to steam clean the engine? Do you mean power wash it? That would not be a good idea...

Welcome to FTE. You have some good stuff that came with your truck. The BTS transmission is bullet proof and Brian backs up his work. The Ats turbo is a nice adder as well. The main purpose of the Water Methanol injection is to help keep the EGT's down. I would assume that there is an aftermarket exhaust on the truck. Is there any type of chip or tuner. How about guages?

I wouldnt steam clean the engine to many electrical connections. Most here use simple green and a garden hose to rinse it off.

Take look at the wheel on the turbo to make sure there are no signs of dusting, also look at the intake tube itself to see if there is any dust or dirt in there as well. The K&N do not fare well with our trucks they let too much dust in and have been the main suspect in the cause of the "death" of a engine or two.

thanks for the replies. i took the truck up to the ats dealer (wild diesel in ogden utah) and had them look it over. it does have a chip but they said its unhooked?. i will leave the truck with them next tuesday and so they can check it out more throughly. they say i might have to get it flashedback to stock by ford and start over with a new programmer.
the reason i want to clean the engine bay is that the previous owner lived in an area with alot of red clay dirt and its everywhere. the guys at wild diesel said the same as you all, so i washed it with simple green, a brush and a garden hose.previous owner also ruined the rims, a nice set of weld evos, iwas hoping they would clean up but it looks like rocks got in the rears and dinged them up badly. they also smoked heavily in the truck so i have ordered new carpet and am looking into a headliner redo. will post some pics in the superduty section soon.

Something to help get the smell of smoke out is put some coffee grounds in a tine pie pan and set it in the truck. We did that to a car that had a smoker owner. Took the smell out really well.

i plugged in the chip (ats brand) and it definitley increased the puwer but the exhaust now smokes black when you accelerate. is this common? it puts out alot! and the fuel mileage went down, i kind of expected this but the smoke seems excessive.

Do you have anymore specs on the chip?
If it's an "out of the box" tuner/chip, they usually don't make the truck smoke too much. You may have a boost leak, inspect all your intercooler boots, maybe even take them off, clean them up and check for cracks in the boots.
Or you may have a really leaky up-pipe. If you can get a light to them, see if you can find any soot on them, usually fairly noticable if they are leaking.

What kind of boost #'s are you running?

i looked at the all the boots and i dont see any signs of leaking. the ats dealer called ats and gave them the serial # thats on the chip and they said its a "pretty hot chip" ?. i pulled the chip and i think i am going to go with a dp tuner set up as i can get a live tune in may at wide open performance. i am hitting 25 pounds of boost stock. 29 at full throttle with that chip in. this weekend i will be under the truck with the wire wheel, brushes, and por15 in preparation for the lift kit. the front end is coming apart for the dynatrac ball joints and free spin hub kit and the ssbs calipers and rotors. also thinking about replacing the fuel tank with the 57 gallon unit from transferflow. if i do this, is the hutch/harpoon mod still needed?

It's nice getting a truck with some goodies, saves some money.

With the smoke smell, when I bought my truck before I got it was told it had a strong smoke smell in it. They had there detail shop run an ionizer (spelling?) overnight and I can't make out any smell of smoke now.

You will still need to do the in tank mods because you will be reuseing your stock pickup/sender and that is where the problems are.
