A/C Problem

This is a problem I started having last summer, but I just noticed something new with this problem in the past week using my A/C for the first time this year. Well, after the A/C is on for a while it eventually starts losing its coldness. It does this when the truck is sitting in idle or there happens to be a point on a trip where I do a lot of coasting and not hitting the gas too much. Well, I noticed that if I hit the gas one or two times pretty hard it gets cold again and it's good for a while until this starts all over again later. I was wondering why it would do that? Why would hitting the gas make the A/C go cold again? It almost sounds like when I hit the gas that it gets the compressor working again. Maybe I'm wrong about that, I can't tell for sure. I also noticed that when the a/c starts losing the coldness that I think I can smell the freon coming through the vents a little. Once I gun the gas and it gets cold again the smell goes away. Anyway, I was wondering what you guys think of this? Thanks.

I guess I should have mentioned that it's full of R134a. And I have one of those gauges that measures the high and low side ports and everything seems to be where it's supposed to be.

If you don't get enough airflow across the condensor, you will loose AC performance. Airflow is everything. If you have an e-fan that engages when the compressor kicks on, you might want to make sure its working. On my van I had the same issue and added an AC triggered e-fan on the front of the condenser. That resolved the problem.
