Identify rear end
I have been a member for a while now, and just got a 1986 F250. How do I identify the rear end?

What does the rear punkin' look like, Does ot have an cover on the back, and how many bolts holding it on. if there is no diff cover it's a 9' rear. My brothers 86 f-250 has a sterling in it. another friend has an 8.8 and another has a 9' my 86 F-150 has an 8.8 with locker. my 84 had a 9. hard to say...

Should be a sterling 10.25, the 8.8 and 9" were the half ton rears.

My truck is an 86 f250hd(over 8500 gvwr). It has the Sterling 10.25 rear in it. Do your hubs stick out real far with bolts around the face of the hub? if so it's most likely the sterling 10.25with full floating axles.

If it has a oil fill plug in the rear cover and the hubs stick out, it's a dana rearend.

Thanks everyone
I just wanted to thank all of you for your help. I saw a picture of the rearend cover listed as the 12 bolt Sterling, so now I know.
