Is there any adjustment in these old worm and cam boxes. I got a small amount of play and was woundering if one can shim or tweak the interference any too tighten them up.
There is no adjustment only pre-load. Play means wear and wear means rebuild. Some think it takes up the slack but all it does is exacerbate the issue with the box, causing more wear.
ND has posted a hundred times the parts necessary to rebuild the box.
How much play is there as about a 1 1/4 inch swing is normal.
probobly about 3/4 inch at the end of the pitman arm. Not much in reality. I was currious as to if there was any adjustment at all. I looked at number dummys posts and know what I need to rebuild. I was just currious if one could shim her up a bit.
You can check and adjust the preload with special tools. The shop manual details how and what you need. It sounds like the sector shaft worm is worn or the ***** are crunched or out of diameter. That part is avalible new along with the bushings. If the ***** are toast those can be replaced with the correct size *****. You reall do not know what is toast untill you take it apart.
Pull off the fill plug and fill it with grease it may help as the ***** may be sticking in the races.
