Unhappy Towing Troubles

My husband and I own a '78 f250 2wd, 460, 4" lift on 35's. We have blown up two transmissions in 30 days towing a 24', 5500 lb trailer. We recently had the c-6 transmission rebuilt with a RV torque converter and shift kit. We also installed a large "perma-cool" transmission cooler. 20 miles into the tow (all uphill) the transmission went! The truck has now been in the shop for over a week and the "transmission guy" says he can't figure out what is wrong with it. The pump in the tranny has not been replaced, could that be the problem? It did pass a flow test before we drove it, or are we asking too much from this truck?

Towing Troubles

sound like the tranyy guy put a patch jod in your tranny have it totally rebuilt all new componets most real tranny guys will do this the first time sound like he fixed what he though was wrong not the real problem, I have been told by a tranny guy that a tranny will blow 150 to 300 miles if not done correctly.

You didn't state the rear axle gear ratio. I would suggest that you find out what it is first. With the 35" tires, you may be asking too much.

If I did the math correctly you have a 3.86 effectual gear ratio taking the 35" tires into consideration. Your 460 should pull 5500 lbs with no problem. I have to agree with the freak- your transmission guy didn't do a good job. I'd make him fix it - no charge. Also, I would suggest that you put 500 miles on the new tranny before pulling any load.
