I have a 72 F100. In the facts and features manual I have the tow rating is 2000lbs trailer weight and 200lbs tongue weight with a ball on the bumper. The truck has a 302. I have pulled much more than that many times with no problems. I am wondering if this is a misprint. I have pulled close to 3000lbs several times. Should I be worried about the truck pulling that much?
It's not a misprint. Even new trucks are only rated at 2000# for bumper towing. The limitation is for the bumper itself. The bumper tow is not nearly as strong and secure as a frame mounted hitch.
If you've ever seen a truck bumper that was twisted in the middle, that is likey how it got that way. Too heavy a trailer.
Even the heavy duty bumpers that look like they belong on an M1 tank are usually bolted to the bumper flanges at the ends of the frame. Frame mounted hitches are still much stronger.
