Ford is really scamming on these things. They can cost upwards of 200 dollars and is a fairly common part to mess up.
Yesterday, at the advice of one of the other members here, I took mine off and tore it down to fix a low power and black smoke problem. I had already put new o rings on it a couple months ago so I was carefull not to harm those and reused them.
I rebuilt my oil cooler a couple weeks ago and had to use some silicone on the front gasket because it just wouldn't stop leaking oil and we thought some might have gotten in the IPR.
Well, it wasn't silicone, It had a bur on the piston that the magnetic solenoid moves. It was so stuck in the bore that I don't know how it was working at all. Also the nut down inside it that keeps the piston in place was backed off about 2 threads and really loose. The piston tube end was also loose and backed out some from the main body of the valve.
I took it all apart and had to bang it on the work bench several times to get the piston out. It was really stuck. I fixed that with some fine krokus cloth. Then I polished the piston on my bench polisher. I completely cleaned everything then and put it back together nice and tight.
It's not even that hard to get to really, Just remove the fuel filter assembly so you can get to it and use a deep 1 1/8 socket to remove it. That's not hard. It took about 15 minutes is all.
When I got it all back in and started it I was doubtful I had fixed anything and actually thought I made it worse. SInce the hpop reservoir drained down there was air in the system but it smoothed out after sitting there a couple minutes.
Now after driving 30-40 miles, it has never idled or run this good before!
Best of all I didn't spend one single dime!
If anyone else thinks they need to replace theirs then take it apart first and see if it can be fixed. You'd probably be amazed how easy it is.
