And it continues...

As some of you know, I torched a few pistons in my 6.0 last spring, and rebuilt the engine. Got it bored 30 over and had a sleeve put in. It took 3.5 months to get it back together because I was in my busy season on the farm.
Got it running in mid August, and although it sounded great, it was down on power, and would miss once in a while, so I didn't drive it much. Took it to town a couple of days ago, it started missing on the way home and quit. I had to get pulled home. Threw the battery charger on it, got the AE all set up, and went and did something else for a couple of hours while the batteries charged. Came back to check ipr, icp, ficm etc, and it fired right up, and had great numbers on everything.
Started putting the scangauge in, because I was sure I had an ipr problem, didn't get the Xgauge stuff done, had to make an emergency water run to our little waterfill 5 miles away last night, and it quit again. This time I checked the dash gauge while I was cranking it, and guess what... no oil pressure.
Pulled it home again, cranked it this morning when it was cold, it took about 10 seconds and the gauge came up and it fired up.
I'm extremely aggravated at myself for not putting an oil pressure gauge in when I had it apart, and I'm even more aggravated at Ford for not putting a decent one in from the factory. Who would build a $60,000 truck with a diesel engine and not put a functioning oil pressure gauge in it??!!
Now I get to tear back into it again, I'm praying I didn't wipe the crank running around with 10lbs of oil pressure for the last 300 miles.
I'm going to start by pulling the filter and checking for metal, if I don't find any other than normal break in stuff, I'll check to see if the filter drain is working and it's filling the housing. If I don't find anything, I guess I pull the bypass or pump out.
I was really hoping to finally just enjoy this truck instead of another round of thrashing on it.
Sigh.

Got the filter out, don't see much carnage in it. Cranked it for a few seconds, got the housing half full, pushed the drain down with a screwdriver, and it held.

How long should it take to fill the housing? Temps in the 40's, 15/40 oil, cranking fast on a charger

IIRC the LPOP's output is 18.5 GPM, so fairly quickly.

Typically if your oil pressure gets too low to lubricate well, it also is too low to operate the injectors so the engine shuts off. You're probably O.K but I'd be very curious to know WHY your pressure dipped so low. Bad front cover???

Thanks guys, that DOES make me feel better. Only found 3 or 4 small metal pieces, and they probably just got flushed through after the rebuild. I kept the filter that was in it when it expired, i went and got it and looked at it, now that thing was full of metal.
I did notice it had long crank times when cold, so I keep thinking it's bypassing in the oil filter housing, I'll have to work on it some more. It will probably be a few days before I get at it, it's Thanksgiving up here this weekend, and we have a herd of people coming to eat and drink with us.
In the meanwhile, I will look at some oiling system diagrams and see if I can figure something out. I never changed the pump when I rebuilt it, it looked to be in excellent shape, as did the housing.

Just something to throw out there but what is your ICP while cranking. Maybe you just have a HPO leak. Just went through this on an 05 I had here and the upper injector O-rings were pounded because the Oil Rail Nipple O-rings were worn out. That truck had 144k on it.
