I just purchased a 1990 ford bronco ll. Iwas just curious about any quirks i need to know about. Truck has about 88,000 miles on it 2.9 liter automatic 4wd. Anything i need to look out for. Thanks for your help.
hey bronco ll thanks for the reply. The trans at this time is working ok. I was curious about how that 4 wd works it doesnt have any locking hubs on it just a button on the dash that says 4wd and a high and low range button. Can you put this in 4wd while you are moving. thanks in advance for your help.
I have a 1986 b2 that I have had since new with auto trans and push button 4wd .In 16 years I have not had a problem with the trans or 4wd.I only have 85000 miles on it so that might make a difference .I put mine in 4wd from a stop I have never done it while it was moving. The only thing that doesn't work on mine is the heater is it worth fixing ?
Scrooge, it's worth it if you want to be warm in the winter.
Short bed, it's called "shift on the fly" 4X4, meaning you can shift it into 4X4 'high' while driving. Never shift it into 'low' while moving an inch, put it in nuetral. Back in '89 I actually was selling these trucks at a new Ford dealership. If I remember correctly, you can shift to 4WD up to 55 mph. But even if my memeory serves me right, I wouldn't dare do that to mine, so don't do it to yours, It's 13 yrs old!!! I've shifted my '89 at low speeds without a problem, and of coarse at a stand still as well. Just take it easy with the "shift on the fly" thing with your B2. Thank of it like this. When you're 50 years old, do you actually believe that you'll be able to get it up on command like you did (or do, whichever the case may be) when you were 19? Just take it easy with her dude. You might want to keep it for a good long while. I sure want to have mine when I'm all crusty and decrepid. Even if someday your driving a Lexus or Jag, you might look back and wish you still had your Baby Bronco. Good luck!!!
To disengage the 4x4 you must drive it in reverse. If you have one wheel that doesn't disengage properly, take a look at the u-joints on the half shafts. Take it easy when in 4x4, you can strip a spline in a hub pretty easy. Exercise your 4x4 on a regular basis as the motor in the transfer case can get sticky with lack of use. CHANGE YOUR TRANSFER CASE AND TRANSMISSION FLUIDS regularly. I got 240k miles out of my trany by changing the fluid every 20-25k miles. Enjoy. Its a great truck even if it does have a few quirks.
Shortbed, tolvibman is right, sorry I left that part out. I didn't even think about it. When disengaing the 4X4, come to a stop, press the button until the light goes out (although you can press it when moving, as I decribed before), then shift into reverse, back up about 20 ft or so (the manual says 12 ft, but it doesn't hurt to be overprotective of the working parts in the front end), and put it in drive and hit the road. The 4X4 disengages as soon as the light goes out, but backing up disengages the auto-locking hubs. The only exception is if you are in 4X4 low. When changing from low, definitely come to a stop and put it in nuetral. You don't have to press low button 1st. Just hit the high button, you can just press only the top button (high) and it'll all come out of 4X4 completely. And make sure you don't forget to back up 20 ft, EVERYTIME, without fail. If you forget, it will cause excess wear to your front hubs. What int. and ext. color scheme is your B II? Named her yet, or is it a he? Mine is, and his name is Chief, lol.
My '86 has the original tranny in it. It's automatic. It works fine, I dont see what the problem with auto trannys is. As far as heads? Yes, mine cracked, unfortunately, we're fixing that today. My 4x4 auto works fine. You'll love your truck, we did!
Even with Manual locking hubs and manual tranny you can "shift on the fly" into 4x4. You just have to have your hubs locked and you can go in and out of 4 high any time all four wheels are going the same speed (iow....don't try this while spinning out). And yes you still have to drive in reverse to unlock the hubs (or at least you should).
