Assuming it's stock, it will have a 2.9 L V6. Look for cracked heads (water in oil), leaking valve cover gaskets. 2.9 will sometimes exhibit lifter noise, which may or may not be a real problem.
Which 5 speed tranny: Mitsubishi (FM146) or Mazda (M5OD)? Mitsubishi transmissions have input bearing issues.
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
Welcome tallpaul14. We hope you like it here.
1996pwrstrk, all the 2.9s that I've had or seen have been hydraulic lifters. But some are noisy. And yeah, that's usually the best way to know for sure what's there. Getting under the truck and looking and checking numbers. Sorry! Hopefully all the tags are still there and are readable.
My sister bought a '90 bII brand new "thought it was a 4x4 but it was a 2wd" hehe, she put 100,000 miles on it and then sold it to me. It now has 186,000 on it and the rearend, front end, motor, trans have never been opened up, I did a timingchain at 180,000 but it did not need it as it has a hydraulically adjustable tensioner. The lifters would make noise when first started then quiet down after oil got to them. 20/50 Mobil.1 stopped all lifter noise- all that has been done to it is basic maintainance. I wouln't sell it for anything..... actually im not stupid but it would take like 5 grand-
Check the body mounts...especially at the rear end, and the ones on each side just about middle of the body...I just repaired/refabricated the last 5 inches of the rear floor pan, cross beam that sits on the frame above the body mounts, and the body mount frame rail area as it was completely rusted out on my 90 Bronco II
