I posted a thread about a hissing sound, kept an eye on it. There is coolant comming out of the cap also. Not much, and i still hear the hissing. I recently did a coolant service to my truck and it seems that the level is over the max line. should i take some out, is the hissing sound related? any info would be great before i try to get it fixed and they try to rape me at the mechanics.
Yes, remove some coolant. The new full line is the min line. Some guys are running theirs just below the min line. There is lots of talk on here about this.
Is the head gaskets an expensive job, about how much just incase so i know im not getting ripped off. If i dont have a good mechanic should i go to the dealer? Or should i drive futher out about an hour or so where i know of a good mechanic?

I have heard between $3500-5000. Just depends who you are asking.
Should the coolant level be on the min line when engine is cold?? Cold meaning hasn't run in a day or 2. I am investigating leaking coolant, i had my gaskets replaced, studs installed, and egr delete about 15k miles back. Just installed a coolant filter about 500 miles ago and notice coolant level is low. I suspect (and hope) it is just leaking around one of the hoses. Not sure though, can't find where it would be leaking everything is DRY as a BONE when I look. Any suggestions?
No...it should be at the minimum mark when the engine is hot. I run mine a little lower than that.
Ok, that makes sense. I had filled mine up to the min level when the engine was cold (I had toped it off when i installed the coolant filter). So frow what your saying I probably overfilled it. If that is the case, maybe some puked out of the cap. Now when the engine is cold the level is about 1/2" below the min line. I'll keep my eye on it, but the last couple days it has stayed there. Do you think i just had too much and a little puked out? I am just trying to pay attention and be cautious, don't want any damn problems with this thing.....especially since we did the gaskest and studs already. Thanks
Also, whenever you open the cooling system up, servicing or adding a coolant filter, you can get some air trapped in the system and after a good drive it will clear itself and now you will be low. A good sign of that would be a low degas bottle and no coolant around the cap. With premium gold coolant if it is puking you will see the dried coolant on the degas bottle. It's like a fingerprint. Premium gold is messy when puked.

That makes sense, good point. I didn't think about that when i installed the coolant filter. I essentially just trapped a quart of air in the system. The worrying is easing...thanks for the suggestions. I'll look around the degas cap & bottle this evening to see if I can tell if it had puked from there. Thanks
