'63 auto shift column - save it or cut it?

I askeed this question in my buildup but got no response. My 63 has an auto shift column that the shift handle & indicator had been removed from. Is this of valuee to any of you guys rstoring a truck, or should i just go ahead and cut the box off & modify it to work with my cv front end? Hate to cut something up that'd make a resto guy cringe...

The solid axle stuff is harder to come by. If it were me, I'd see if I can find a newer model column that will work and modify the older tube only if absolutely necessary.

The column is just tube that slides over the integral box/shaft. You need to mount a shifter to accomidate the four speed automatic and the stock one will not do that. The automatic column is rarer than hens teeth for 61 to 64 and brings preimum $$$ prices. Sell it on eaby to someone who needs it.

Modifying it is difficult as it has no lower bearing. It is better to use a Ididt or flaming river universal as it will need to be mover up further onto he firewall to get better angles for the borgeson u joints. When i do this type of mod i also add a new lower section from a 65 66 to the dash to accomidate the column in a higher position. I also add a mount at the firewall to restrain the column.

Garbz: I tthink I saw in your christine thread that you used a 65-66 mount on the firewall & dash. Or am I remembering that wrong? Also, I thought about the flaming river/ididit columns but would go with painted and would like to keep the funky "original" (if it even is) wheel. If I can't use the stock wheel I think i'd go for a '40 ford replica wheel...

I have a Stock 4 speed 66 column in my 63. I made a custom retainer for the bottom of the column and placed a 65 66 lower section in the dash and modified the brake hanger.

Here is the column exit and connection to the rack.

Here is the lower retainer

Here is the dash mods

Here is the modified 63 pedal mount.

The 65 66 column looks very similar to the 61 to 64 and once the lower dash and mount is modified it looks bone stock. If you run the 63 column at the stock angle you need a double cardian u joint to prevent angle bind. Moving it up and up makes the column more like a 65 66 and gives you better room.

So did you actually cut the lower dash & swap it for the later piece?

Yes it is a section from a 65 66 2 wheel drive. you need to do this to mount the column using the stock bracket on the column.

It is pretty simple to do as you use the center lines of the switches to line everything up.
