long term drivetrain plans
long term drivetrain plans
so I like good mileage, but I also like to wheel a bit
I like having one auto tranny in the fleet just in case I cut a foot off but the C6 it don't have enough gears
I don't have a ton of money to drop all at once for a drivetrain swap but If i watch my bases I can pull a few hundred a month out and still have a bit of my "get it running" budget for this truck left over
so here's the plan to give me every wheelers dream drive train
1)find a gear vendor overdrive for behind the stock transfer caseand get it on there
2)Gather up these parts: spare stock transfer case; divorced np205; dana 60 front? some cash for the driveshaft shop and machinist
3)have the front shaft and chain parts cut off that spare transfer case, and a cover plate fabbed up t keep the oil in the two speed gearbox; fab mounts for that divorced np205 exactly midship so I can run the same front and rear driveshafts; get the three driveshafts made.
4) put it together cut transfer case feeds the gear vendor which feeds the np205 and finaly the rear wheels
5)end results: 6 usable foward gears in any drive range; choice of 2hi 2low 4hi 4low and 4low-low, once I find tha dana 60 front end that shoud drive just about any tire size I want
comments?
sugestions?
anyone got the parts I need laying out back and want me to haul them away?

I'm not sure what you're plans for that extra case is, are you planning on running 3 tcases. with that combo you might have to stretch your crew cab, lol
I have found even without a doubler case these diesels have enough low end torque to idle around the rocks in low range.
My plans for my crew go a different route, I wan't to go with an over tranny,Tcase and gearvendor, which gives me double over and then I can either run 4.10 or 4.56 gears and still have decent top end.
Another option for you if you want two cases is to dith the stock case and run a 205/203 doubler and a gear vendor.

another option I am considering is doing a manual swap with the small block t19 (5.13first I beleive) gear vendor then divorced np205
but than I have to get all the stick shift parts and don't have the auto I can take myself to the ER in if I cut something off that I need to drive a stick

oh and the plan was only to use one of the stock transfer cases but to keep the one that's there right now in place while the "new" one sits around in the machine shop waiting for someone to have time to get at the odd jobs cue
Consider an E4OD transmission, Gear Vendors overdrive, 4.56 gears sitting on 33" rubber.
1800 RPM in double overdrive would be 70 MPH.
Kick the Gear Vendors off, 2300 in stock overdrive would be 70 MPH, great for towing.
Low range, low gear wide open 3300 RPM would be 9 MPH, more power than you could need and still get decent U joint life from the 4.56 gear in the axle.

too many wires on that tranny for my taste and I almost never go over 65 anyway so as long as I get it around 2k at 65.
also u joints may break more oftem but taller gears in the axle (numericaly lower) reduce the chance of a ring and pinion failure.
with my driving style off road the more gears I have the longer the axles will live due to me not having to stomp it to get the front wheels up on the rocks

also 1100 where the tourque converter starts putting lots of power through would be 3 mph which as odd as it might seem is often way to fast

not knocking the idea's that would make a great mud truck and be real nice if I wer comuting in the truck but my plans are for it to be loaded/towinf more often than cruising empty, when I don't have anything to haul I have a vw diesel that saves me more in fuel over even a 25mpg rig then it costs me to keep it on the road
Well I have had a gas tranny behind one for years, with 410 gears and it will take of without touching the throttle with a bigger load than my dually with 3.55s will even move. lol Never touched the gears in the front or rear other than the spiders in the front twice, but they didn't wear out. lol .I have a gas tranny waiting for when the clutch goes out, with the gearvendor I think it will be sweet.
this is another truly worthy idea because I doubt I will ever need the gear vendor in 4wd
NP435 (6.69) to Ranger OD (.73) to 203/205 doubler to 4.10's (maybe 4.56's depending on tire size). It would give 24 forward speeds and a crawl ratio of 110-125:1. The only real expense would be for the OD unit. The rest of the drivetrain is cheap swap meet and wrecking yard fodder.
With the diesel and all of that reduction, you may want to look bigger than a Dana 60. Or be really gentle on the skinny pedal.
