Actually it would wear on the shifting fork and the gear. Not really a good idea. I've got an Uncle that would drive his farm truck with his foot resting on the clutch pedal. Be going down the road and all of the sudden the engine would rev way up, and he would catch himself and let off the clutch. Had to replace that clutch every 3 years, and he never could figure out why.

On the those old 3 on the tree there were two bars down on the side of the tranny. one for 1st/rev and one for 2nd/3rd. They had a two rods that crossed each other and when you moved the shifter it would grab one rod other the other. My dad always kept a large flat srewdriver in his maverick because they would bind up and you would have to slide under he car and pry them apart lol. More than once I was seen under there on the street prying when it would get caught between 1st and 2nd lol.
