How can I avoid turbo flutter/compressor stall?

Well, I am convinced that I need at least a WW, but preferably a ported housing to eliminate the turbo flutter/compressor stall that I get when towing my camper. Unfortunately, neither one are something I can do right now (hopefully can within the next few months). But this is prime camping season, so we are pulling pretty often.

What I need to know is how can I change my driving habits to avoid getting into compressor stall?

Now, I'm not talking about the surge you get when you put the hammer down and are making high boost. I'm talking about the flutter/stall that I get at 15psi and about 1800-2000 rpms in OD when pulling the 5th wheel. I would prefer not to have to downshift at every hill to keep my speed, that defeats the purpose of why I got the chip to begin with!

Y'alls input is appreciated.

Keep your rpm's up when towing and it will help alot. Either pull with your OD off or drive faster... If you keep the rpm's up around 2200-2300 your egt's will be lower and you shouldn't have surge.

What you are describing IS surge. It can happen the way you describe it at 1500-2000 RPMs or at WOT. You know how to fix it, and you can just downshift if the RPMs are too low, like Clay said...

All of the conventional approaches have been covered so far.

Keep the RPMs up = free
WW = $100
ATS compressor housing = $420

There is another option, albeit a crazy one. The obvious answer to surge on a gasser is to use a BOV or BPV. There is an electronically controlled BOV for diesels, made by BD Diesel. And it's only $660.

Personally, I know times are tough but your going to burn fuel like crazy keeping those RPM's up pulling that 5'er so in a sence, its not free, you'll be spending more at the pump and stopping more. At the very least, I would try to get a WW in there, somehow.

I'm not a towing expert by any means, but I thought that was only when climbing hills or something. If the EGTs are at 1200 on the flats, you have bigger issues, I would think.

Sorry Bob -- I was generalizing. But likewise, are you surging just chugging down flat highways? If so, you definitely need a fix. WW should do it. Like Mike said, you don't want to be running around the country without OD because of surge.

Well, it flutters around 15 psi and 2000 rpm usually at about 70 mph when I go up small hills. I am able to get to 15 psi real easy on those small hills an I have to TRY to keep it under that. Again, it's not a defined surge, it is the mellow fluttering sound that I am hearing. It's just a pain because the truck will jump up to 15 psi in no time and just hover right there for the entire hil unless I let off the accelerator or downshift. It's really a pain when Im trying to tow using cruise control.

Sorry Bob. The only ways around surge have been covered and I don't have any additional information as far as that goes.

Justin brought up a blow off valve. Sorry, that won't do anything except limit the maximum boost to 12-14 PSI if Bob is trying to mitigate the surge issue. He's not trying to limit maximum intake pressure, but keep the turbocharger compressor from running on the left side of the compressor efficiency map at mid-boost levels.

I installed an Aero Turbine on my truck a couple of years ago and it almost

completely eliminated the turbo stall. I still get some once and a while, but it

is easier to control without too much effort. When I am pulling 4-5 K on a 6%

grade I will hear the flutter a bit about 1900, but with feathering the throttle

a bit I can usually make it stop.

I have a WW sitting on a shelf, but haven't got around to installing it

because the surge has been more manageable with the Aero Turbine.

Someday I hope to get a 38r to help the engine breath better while towing,

but for now I am happy with the way it works. If I had it to do over. I would

buy an Aero Turbine again. Here is a link to what I have.

Honestly guys, Im more concerned about the install of the WW than anything. Supposedly the ported housing is a lot easier. I am just apprehensive to tackle this on my own, but I don't think it can wait until RRE.
