Difference between 351M, 351C, & 351W
The 1971/72 production Australian 351 Cleveland powered Ford Falcon Phase 111 GT was at the time, the fastest 4 door production car in the world with a top speed exceeding 145MPH at 6250 RPM.
The 1973 Phase 4 Falcon was stopped after very limited production due to the new 'supercar legislation' introduced by the govt after the oil crisis and insurance company complaints about high powered cars on the road.
These production Falcon 4 door sedans with 400 HP blueprinted/balanced Cleveland 351's and was seen to do 154 MPH on the track.
De Tomaso Pantera bought up as many of the last 351 Cleveland Australian cast engines as they could in the early 1980's to keep their marque running.
Cleveland's were also the only V8 fitted to Australian production F' series trucks and the trucks were also exported in R/Hand drive to South Africa as were V8 powered Falcons, Fairlanes.
Cleveland's continued to be produced in Australia until 1982 and supplied in vehicle until 1984.
After 1977 Australian cast block Cleveland 351 and 302 cu (yes 302 Cleveland's) were fitted with 780 Carter Thermoquad 4 BBL carburettors and had a unique Australian 2V 4 BBL manifold, earlier production utilised 2 BBL 2 V Cleveland's with Motorcraft carburettors.
We 'like em" down here in the South Pacific and there are still a reasonable availability of used blocks here as well as an aftermarket industry supporting the engines with performance upgrade parts.
As for reliability, I have one well maintained Cleveland that has done over 300,000 miles reliably in a truck and still running strong with few repairs although I replaced the camshaft and timing chain and gears for improved performance.
jus sayin'
