Right after getting pulled over for heaving a headlight out (No ticket, and already fixed), I'm driving down the road and I feel the side-to-side restriction on my shifter go out. Now, I'm stuck in second gear. It feels like I still have front-to-back control but I'm afraid to take it out of gear because then I can't go anywhere. I'll be crawling home in 2nd gear after leaving here.
So... What now? I haven't gotten under to look at it yet but i'm hoping it's just a failed bushing that i can buy at the auto store.
Ouch! It doesn't sound good. The T-18 tranny has a removable cover that contains the shift rails and forks. The ZF is an integral package that's a B**** to work on. Good luck.
I checked the oil in it two weeks ago. It does leak but it's slow.
I can swing the shift **** from where it should be, in second gear, all the way over to the right PAST where it would be for reverse. It doesn't fight me at all, and this is without going forward.
It sounds like the pins may have sheard off in the shifting tower. There shoul be two one on the drivers side and one on the pass. side. To check, unscrew the top of the tower and lift the cap off. You should be able to see the pins there.
After enough miles I have seen the "shifter ball and tower cover" wear enough that the shifter finger could slip out of the groove in the shifter rails.
When that happens, it does what you are describing.
Get the shifter finger back in the correct rail and slot, then tighten the tower cover down a few more turns, good as new.
