I had a liver transplant 2 1/2 years ago. I was given no more than 6 weeks to live at that time. Since I had the liver transplant I have not been sick at all, not even a cold or a headache! It has been like a biblical miracle to me. My liver was gone from many years of heavy drinking (self inflicted). I so not drink anymore and do not miss it after all the hell that I went through with the sickness and all. My transplant was done at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. I had my check up last week, I do that every six months, and the Doctor told me that my liver will outlast me. The first transplants of livers were done in the early 70s and them folks are still alive! I have nothing but praise for them Doctors and Nurses there, they are without a doubt, the very best! If you want to e-mail me privately feel free to do so and I can give you some of the details. The transplant program is a very good program and if you are not a donor, you should consider it.
Just keep on keepin' on. Prayer does wonders. God will take care of it. Don't worry about babies after traumatic events. I have a sister that we adopted who was a crack baby. She's three now and you couldn't tell what she went through. They're like a super ball. They just bounce back
I want to tell you that I was a very nervous individual when I was told that they had a liver for me and I had to get to Richmond within 3 hours. I even considered not going through with it and let nature take it's course but, by the grace of god, I had the transplant and it was very successful. Todays medicine is so good that it is hard to comprehend what they can do. It has been a bit over two and a half years since I had mine and I am the happiest person on earth! As far as medication goes, I take 100 Mg of cyclosporine in the morning and at nite. That is the anti-rejection medication. I also take magnesium tablets, they are for the disposal of the cyclosporine byproducts that develop. There were several young children that I have seen that had transplants when I had my after surgery appointments an they were doing excellent. The liver transplant program success rate is around 95%.
Well just wanted to let you all know, 2 weeks been waiting on a Donor and wife said thats enough. She has been testing the last 2 days to be a living Donor and everything looks great so hopefully in next couple days we can get on with it .. Just have to convince the Doc's we've waited long enoughThey have Him listed about 1/2 way up the donor list .. So i just thought before i head back east for a week or so i stop and let everyone know how things were going Thanks John
Keep your head up, amigo. Like Mantta said, God and the odds are in your son's favor. In a year, you'll still feel the same way you do now, except you wont have that dread and fear, it will be replaced with joy and hope.
Oh, wait, I'm supposed to be cold and heartless! No, seriously, kids like your's are my kind of heroes, and dad's like you are, too.

The father of one of my friends had a liver transplant 2 years ago, and it has made such a difference in his life. He was near death, and now he is very active, hunting, fishing, being a grandpa.
The donor was a friend of the family, who had a respiratory disease that killed her, and then they get the call about a liver coming available. It seems that this woman had made the effort to be sure that if she died her liver went to that person.
It was a big shock, as he thought he would never get a transplant, because of his age and poor condition.
This brings me to a case going on in NE. right now.
There is a 49 year old woman in the NE. Penal System who is serving a life sentance for murder, and she needs a liver transplant. There is a public debate going on now about whether she should be put on the transplant list. The transplant could cost taxpayers up to $500,000, plus take a liver away from a law abiding citizen in need! The Governor says his hands are tied, because of some judges decision about the proper medical care for inmates. I have mixed feelings about this, and wonder what others here think.
I hope everything goes well for your child, Greg58
