Diesel engine swap
<hr style="color: rgb(209, 209, 225); background-color: rgb(209, 209, 225);" size="1"> <!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> I want to install my 96 Powerstroke low-miler and trans and transfer-case from my rolled 96 f-250 into a 92 f-350 crew-cab that was also diesel. question is: what is needed to adapt the wiring harnesses,hoping just from firewall out ?
You will need everything, inside and out I believe. Powerstrokes are not the simple mechanical engines the idi's are. They need all that electronic stuff to make them run.
It can be done, several have done it before in several older vehicles.
Lots of pictures, lots of labled connections and most likely you also must not be afraid of wiring or modifying the harnesses to fit their new home.
If you feel you can handle all that, I am going to say it is doable.
You will have some time in the wiring for sure, but you will also have a vehicle a bit different than most have.
Oh believe me buddy ,i can handle it ! My other rig is a 76 CJ-5 ,454 chev rock-crawler .I`ll just swap out the entire wiring harness and get er done. This rig is my hauler of toys. Thanks for your input
As cheap as the 94-97 PSD's have become, the time, money and effort to put into the swap doesn't seem to be worth it to build something that is readily available. And from what many have said on this forum, the first gen Powerstroke doesn't match up to a turbo'd IDI anyways.
I'd say sell the '92, and buy a clean 94-97 crew cab. You can either sell the good drivetrain from your '96, or keep it for spare parts.
