Smile Optional Shoulder Belts

Hi,
I plan to add the optional shoulder belts to my 1974 F100. The only picture that I've seen of them is in the 1974 owner's manual. I've bought the original ford the parts = shoulder belts and new anchor plates. Now I just need to know the correct location to install them. Does anyone have this option on their truck ? Measurments and or pictures would be a great help. Thank you.

I found one in a junkyard near me...it had some kind of special package and paint. It has shoulder belts that look factory and they match my truck pretty well I might have to grab them.

Don't you have to go in and add some supports for the shoulder belt? My '74 doesn't have them but my '79 does. However, my '79 is about 50 miles away from me right now.

Just happen to be stripping down the cab on my 79 today. my inner pillars have a hole cut in from the factory and the bracket seems to mount to a reinforcement recessed in the hole. looks like it would take some metal work to retrofit to a regular cab without them. can't post pictures cam not with me but hope this helps. good luck

I wasn't under the impression that these were ever optional - my understanding was that the first few years had lap belts only, and then around 76-77 or so the government mandated shoulder belts, at which point all trucks from then on had shoulder belts. Could be wrong though.

FWIW i have two '75's both with lap belts only, i also have two '76's both with shoulder belts, dunno if it was an option in '76 or mandated but by '77 i'm pretty sure they were standard (mandated).

Hope these pictures help.

I think your correct about the shoulder belts becoming standard for 1976 trucks. They have cut outs in the inner b-pillars with retractor mounting brackets welded in place. My Dads 79 has this set up. It didn't look like an easy add on for my 74 F100. Plus I want to keep my truck close to stock. My 74 just came with the lap belts. They are the old style seat belts Ford was using in the 60s. My 74 owner's manual shows optional shoulder belts. They are non retracting, you just fold they and plug they into a boot at the top when not in use. They use the same type of buckels as the lap belts. I just installed them today in my truck and I used the picture in the owner's manual as my location guide. I'm happy with them. I bought the shoulder belts on ebay and bought new anchor plates from National Parts Depot. Thanks for the help.

My 77 has some alterations. It's exactly like Tees77150's truck, even the same colors, accept a past owner cut out the attaching anchor plate to attempt to install 6x9 speakers. I found a parts truck to cut out the pillars (thanks Jared) and will have to weld the brackets back in place. For now, I'm having to run lap belts. Sure was easy to mess up a nice truck.
