gear setup and diff welding

i told you guys i was planning on getting my rear diff welded, but i forgot to ask this question i've been thinking about. should i regear it first with the open diff and drive it for a while to make sure everything is setup properly? or would you guys say it wouldn't matter. i don't wanna put any extra stress on the new gears right off the bat. i was just figuring the welded diff wouldn't be a good idea at the same time as the new gear

Won't make much difference at all, the gears are going to have the load on them from the welded diff eventually... That'd be like putting in a set of gears with an open carrier, breaking them in, and then swapping the open carrier for a spool, doesn't really make that much sense.

Make sure your gears are set correctly....
Proper backlash etc etc, then weld it up...

thanks truckin, that's what i was figuring, just didn't know if i should break the gears in with out the added stress of being fully locked up. no matter how good the setup is they still need to make a wear pattern against each other

I have done a few on derby cars but if I was to do it on something that matters I would remove it anyways and take the ring gear off the carrier before welding it. I wouldn't want to risk getting any spatter on the ring or pinion.

yeah i know. i'm swapping gears. i was gonna have the ring gear off. i'm probably gonna have to take it to a welding shop, or have my dad do it at work cuz neither of us have a welder right now and i don't trust my ability enough to do it myself. my sister is a prof. welder but she lives in texas now so it's probably going to a shop

Make sure you dont weld your ring gear to your pinion gear...

Something to double check while sober...
That would suck to wake up the next morning to take off with your new "locker" and not move an inch...
