My compass/temp died over a year ago. Remedies are scarce and widely scattered across the Internet. Most suggest re-soldering the resistors because they break loose. Module removal was easy on my 94. T10 Torx and nail file are not needed. All you need is a Phillips to three screws then four to disassemble.
After inspecting the printed circuit board using many different lights and magnification and probing with a tooth pick I see nothing suspicious. Everything seems to have a nice bubble of shiny solder. The resistors are about the size of a match head and none of the 40 or so appear to be loose. There is discoloration of the board around the component that has a heat sink and what I am guessing to be a capacitor next to it, but with the heat sink there that may be normal heat???
I was not good at soldering fifty years ago and will not attempt solder joints that require magnification to see. I'm going to clean the two connectors and reinstall as that worked for one guy.
No luck. I think a capacitor is fried. Getting it in the sunlight with a magnifying glass the 120 uF 6 v capacitor area is really dark. Turning the board over, the area near the capacitor is discolored also. I reinstalled everything and there is no improvement. The display is dead but my map lights still work.
This project is tabled until I find someone who can replace the capacitor and see if that fixes it.
Thanks for the info. I don't find the module on eBay but see lots of explorer overhead consoles. Glad to know they have the same module, compass and temp.
